What is brainstorming?

Brainstorming is a technique used to generate a large number of ideas in a short period of time to overcome an issue or problem. It is based on the assumption that the greater the number of ideas generated, the greater the chance of producing an effective solution. Very rarely does one person hold all the ideas. Brainstorming provides a practical means to tap in to the ideas of the whole team and is a popular method of group interaction, commonly used to engage and to promote collaborative working amongst teams. The key to successful brainstorming is to clarify the parameters up front by clearly defining the issue and to create a supportive environment where participants feel free to generate ideas.
